Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP)
The Critical Skills Employment Permit is Ireland's priority pathway for highly skilled workers in occupations experiencing significant labor shortages. To qualify, you need a job offer of at least €38,000 per year in an occupation not on the Ineligible Occupations List, or at least €32,000 for occupations on the Critical Skills Occupation List (maintained by DBEI). No Labor Market Needs Test (LMNT) is required — the CSEP fast-tracks admission because the government has determined these skills are in short supply.
CSEP holders can apply for long-term immigration status (Stamp 4, allowing unrestricted work) after 21 months and for Irish citizenship by naturalization after 5 years of legal residence (including the work permit period). Spouses and civil partners of CSEP holders can apply for permission to work in Ireland without needing their own employment permit.
General Employment Permit (GEP)
The General Employment Permit is a broader category for occupations not covered by CSEP and not on the Ineligible Occupations List. The minimum annual salary is €30,000 (€27,000 for certain food production roles). Crucially, the employer must conduct a Labor Market Needs Test — advertising the role for a minimum of 8 weeks on the EURES job board and DSP's Jobs Ireland platform and being unable to fill the position with an Irish/EEA national before hiring from outside the EU/EEA. The GEP is initially granted for 2 years and can be renewed.
How to apply through EPOS
Applications are submitted online through the Employment Permits Online System (EPOS) at enterprise.gov.ie. Either the employer or the employee can initiate the application. Required documents include: signed employment contract, passport-sized photos, passport copy, qualifications certificates, evidence of offer meeting salary and occupation requirements, and (for GEP) proof of the labor market test. The application fee is €1,000 for a 2-year permit (€500 for 6-month permits). Processing times are approximately 4–10 weeks for straightforward cases.
Related Questions
Can I change jobs on an Irish work permit?
You can change jobs if you have held your permit for at least 12 months (for CSEP, 6 months with certain conditions) and your new role is in the same occupation category. A new work permit application is typically required for a significant job change.
Does Ireland have a work permit for digital nomads or remote workers?
Ireland does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. Remote workers employed by a non-Irish company may need to explore options under European Union free movement (for EU/EEA nationals) or consult a solicitor about permission under Stamp 1G.
Can my family join me in Ireland on a work permit?
CSEP holders can sponsor family reunification (spouse/civil partner and dependent children) relatively quickly. GEP holders may also sponsor family, but procedures are more complex.
Does Ireland work permit count toward citizenship?
Yes. Time spent legally in Ireland on a valid work permit counts toward the 5-year continuous residency required for Irish naturalization, provided the specific permit type is qualifying.
What occupations are on the Ineligible Occupations List?
The Ineligible Occupations List includes clerical/administrative roles, general operatives, retail assistants, security guards, and other roles where the labor market has sufficient domestic supply. The list is updated annually by DBEI. If your occupation is on this list, neither CSEP nor GEP is available.
