How the EOI points pool works
The Skilled Migrant Category uses a two-step model. First, you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Immigration New Zealand's SkillFinder system, answering questions about your qualifications, employment, and personal circumstances. Your EOI is scored and placed in the EOI pool. Immigration New Zealand draws from the pool bi-weekly, selecting candidates above a certain points threshold for an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
If you receive an ITA, you have three months to lodge a full residence application with supporting documents. An ITA does not guarantee a visa — your application is then assessed by an immigration officer. As of 2026, the SMC is processing ITAs for applicants with job offers from New Zealand employers, with the pool being drawn approximately every 2 weeks.
Points factors in the SMC
Skilled employment in New Zealand carries the highest points weight: 50 points for a current skilled job offer (or 60 for employment in a region outside Auckland). Qualifications: up to 70 points for a New Zealand Level 9–10 qualification. Partner qualifications and skilled employment: 20 points. Age: 30 points for ages 20–29, 20 points for 30–39, 10 points for 40–44, 5 points for 45–49 (no points 50+). Recognized New Zealand qualifications and work experience in New Zealand add bonus points.
Most competitive applicants combine a qualifying job in New Zealand with a bachelor's or master's degree to reach the 160–180 typical selection threshold. Without current New Zealand employment, achieving the threshold is significantly harder.
Recent changes and processing status
New Zealand's immigration system underwent a major reset after the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 Residence 2021 program processed a large backlog. The SMC resumed draws in 2022 with a focus on applicants who already have skilled employment in New Zealand. Processing times improved from 3–4 years to 18–24 months for most applications as of 2026. Immigration New Zealand also introduced the Straight to Residence visa for ANZSCO Level 1–3 occupations in critical shortage areas.
Related Questions
Do I need a job offer to apply for NZ Skilled Migrant?
A job offer in NZ is not strictly required, but it is by far the most effective way to gain enough points. Most recently selected EOIs had current skilled employment in New Zealand.
What is the SMC skill level requirement?
Your current job must be at ANZSCO Skill Level 1, 2, or 3 (management, professional, or trade). Some Level 4 jobs may qualify under certain circumstances. ANZSCO occupation classifications are listed in the ANZSCO database.
How long does the EOI stay in the pool?
An EOI remains in the pool for 2 years from submission. You can update it with new qualifications or employment. If not selected in 2 years, it expires and you must resubmit.
Can I include my partner's points?
Yes. Your partner's skilled employment and/or qualifications earn you up to 20 bonus points on your EOI. Your partner must be included in the application and accompanying documents submitted.
Is New Zealand Skilled Migrant permanent residence?
Yes. The SMC grants New Zealand permanent residence (an indefinite right to live and work in NZ). Permanent residents can apply for NZ citizenship after 5 years of residence.
